SHE Initiative – Holiday English Language Programme (HELP)

15 August 2016 SHE Initiative – Holiday English Language Programme (HELP)

Christopher Kolade Foundation (CKF) hosted a pilot Holiday English Language Programme (HELP), designed to improve the English language proficiency of its SHE Initiative girls.

The HELP, a non-residential workshop, was held in conjunction with the Lagos State Ministry of Education - District VI from August 15th to 26th. 86 girls attended the workshop held in three centers– Okota (27), Ilupeju (25) and Ojodu (34).

The programme’s training faculty comprised six expert English language teachers identified within the Education District VI.

CKF Board Chairman, Mrs Beatrice Kolade, visited two of the workshop locations, Babs Fafunwa Millennium Senior Grammar School and Ilupeju Senior Grammar School, to observe the sessions and inspire the girls; on the need to strive for self-improvement in all aspects of their lives. The TG/PS Education District VI also paid an unscheduled visit to the three workshop centres.

Feedback from the students and their test scores indicates a significant improvement in their understanding of English from programme entry to exit.

Testimonials

  • My self-confidence has improved, not just because of the SHE Initiative leadership training but essentially this English training.  I don’t see myself asking for ‘help’ during any essay writing exams in school anymore
  • Letter writing and essays are always my fear during any examination, now I won’t panic anymore, I am sure I can now write essays well.
  • Until my participation in this training my use of tenses was very poor, it made me uncomfortable speaking, now I can share my views better
  • All my life, I deliberately avoid letter writing in any exams, because punctuation was my fear. Now I won’t run from letter writing anymore because I am sure I can punctuate well and not lose marks
